  • Road Test: Smart Forfour (2004-)
    Superminis by: Farah Alkhalisi
    Smart Forfour (04- )
    IMAGE RATING:

Yes, it's rather contrived, with familiar Smart cues (two-tone bodies with co-ordinated Tridion safety cell) and cutesy styling on what is essentially a rather conventional car. And yes, it does look a bit toy-like. But it's arguably the only supermini distinctive-looking enough and with enough character and brand kudos to come anywhere near the classless, near-universal appeal of the MINI. Now that there are new MINIs everywhere, the Forfour could be the next urban fashion accessory, as long as it's accepted as being a proper member of the Smart family and not just a badge-engineered, relatively traditional Colt clone. Time will tell, but we reckon Smart will pull it off.
