Seat has escaped the shackles of its early-days budget-brand aura, earning a reputation for sporty, reliable cars since it joined the VW fold. The last Leon's motorsports involvement buoyed the model's image somewhat, too. Whether it can truly call itself the Alfa Romeo of the Volkswagen Group is debatable though. The Leon is a sharp-suited competitor in the small family car class, but as we mentioned in the introduction, Seat's launching of the Toledo and Altea has confused the Leon's standing somewhat. It's between genres, and will undoubtedly attract a wider range of buyers that a conventional hatch might; but those buyers may not be the youthful, active kind that help to boost desirability.
