Soldiering onRover's 45 saloon/hatchback is comfortable and pleasant to drive, but it's not the roomiest car in its class and it's long overdue for replacement. However, despite lagging behind most of its rivals in terms of style, dynamics and refinement, it's still worth a look at the right price - i.e. at a substantial discount, which is relatively easy to achieve as Rover dealers have a lot of unsold stock. The range currently consists of 1.4 (hatch only), 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 diesel models, the diesel offered with outputs of 100bhp or 111bhp. It was mildly revised in 2004 but production ceased when MG Rover entered administration and there is no factory warranty, although dealers should be able to offer aftermarket warranties on new and used models. Parts supply is unaffected but there remains some uncertainty about the strength of residual values.
