  • Road Test: Rover 25 (2000-2005)
    Superminis
    Rover 25 (00- )
    PERFORMANCE RATING:

None of the engines are particularly powerful, but since the 25 is relatively lightweight and low-riding, they don't feel too slow. The 1.1 is surprisingly quick, in fact, with the other petrol engines offering little advantage, though the 1.4 16v is the best all-rounder if you do a lot of motorway or higher-speed driving. The Steptronic gearbox (a six-speed clutchless CVT auto) works well, and so does the torquey diesel - even if all versions are somewhat raucous and unrefined.
