  • Road Test: Rolls-Royce Phantom (2003-)
    Large Executive by: John Simister

    SAFETY AND SECURITY RATING:

There's a comprehensive set of airbags - front, front-side and curtain - while the wraparound rear seat design renders rear side 'bags redundant according to Rolls-Royce. There's a full complement of braking, traction and stability safety systems, too. The aluminium structure is designed to absorb impacts effectively - one tough American test involves 40 percent of a car's front undergoing an impact at 40mph, and after the test there wasn't even a change in the gaps between the Phantom's front doors and the wings. The structure was repairable, too. Security is by a typical top-end system, except that Rolls-Royce has yet to embrace automatic unlocking and keyless engine start.
