| Road Test: Renault Laguna (2001-2005) |

| PERFORMANCE RATING: |
 |
The Laguna's engines are advanced and strong performers (the noisy 110 bhp 1.6 has now been dropped from the range). The 1.8 is pretty powerful (125 bhp) though this too can be a little raucous if you push it hard; the 2.0 (140 bhp) is little better. The 210bhp 3.0-litre V6 ought to feel extremely sprightly, but its pace is blighted by the fact that it's mated to a rather stubborn 5-speed automatic gearbox. Best options are the diesels; the 1.9dCi common rail diesel is the best all-round Laguna engine, developing 90 bhp, 100 bhp or 120bhp and being near imperceptible in its operation once up to speed. The 2.2 dCi (150 bhp) is effectively the high-performance model in the range; it's a nicer drive than the 2.0T turbo-charged petrol version (165 bhp), which has a less even power delivery, less mid-range muscle and a tendency towards torque-steer if you get over-enthusiastic.
