The Clio has had a fashionable image ever since Nicole and Papa first strode across our TV screens. They exuded French chic, a fact shamelessly and quite brilliantly exploited by the advertising. Renault's new ad campaign, which breaks in mid-October, seeks to extend this theme in a new direction and features two unknown actors, a French woman and a British man, driving left- and right-hand drive Clios and making fun at the traditional Anglo-French rivalry.
For those of us not so easily swayed by marketing, there are always the Clio's shapely good looks to draw us in. It needs to appeal to a wide range of customers, from first-time buyers clutching their freshly-minted driving licences to the elderly wanting something simple, safe and slow to take them to the shops - and it is attractive enough to do so.
