A hypercar. A Porsche hypercar. And one that's styled with some care and subtlety, too. This isn't a machine that shows off its extreme aerodynamic design, or covers itself in lairy curves. It's well-resolved in its looks. Chief designer Harm Lagaay explains: it's important when doing a run of 1500 cars that it remains an object of desire. The 911 GT1 was a thinly disguised Le Mans car and after they'd built the necessary 25, no-one else wanted one. But Le Mans pedigree helps the Carrera GT's image among those who know. The engine and chassis were designed by Porsche's factory race shop for a Le Mans assault in 2000, but the rules changed and it was stillborn. Hence the decision to withdraw from racing and build a road car instead.
