Peugeot's 406, still one of the more handsome family favourites, is a popular choice - especially in HDi diesel form; choose from 90bhp or 110bhp 2.0 litre units, or a 136bhp 2.2. Otherwise, engines are 1.8 and 2.0 litre 16-valvers, a more powerful 2.2 litre, and the fast, smooth V6. There's a sensual Coupe variant too, which is tested separately.
