| RUNNING COSTS RATING: |

It needs servicing every 20,000 miles (12,000 miles for diesels), as is now the Peugeot norm, but insurance groupings are higher than for UK-badged rivals whose unimpressive depreciation rates it shares. Petrol fuel economy is well short of the class, though 3.0 V6 models are better than they were; diesels naturally excellent. Some rival cars offer more kit for the money, but only the Passat feels more of a quality product. A 406 is no bargain, but you'll enjoy owning one - especially with Peugeot's increasingly generous special deals.
