| DRIVING RATING: |
 |
There's some driveline snatch in traffic, and a lack of space around the pedals can make life difficult for all but the small-footed. Compact size and power steering make for easy parking. Electric window switches are hard to find - they're under the handbrake, facing away from and invisible to the driver. This is why you buy a 106 GTI. Few cars steer as eagerly on the throttle without landing you in trouble, but the 106's shortness makes it easy to correct a tail slide tidily before things get too out of hand, so it's never intimidating. There's loads of grip, and you can flick the 106 through a corner at astonishing speeds if the opportunity arises, engine blaring in accompaniment. All it needs is crisper steering response either side of the straight-ahead position, and a firmer brake feel.
