    SAFETY AND SECURITY RATING:

Nissan reckons that, with the mods for Europe, the Murano would merit a four-star score in the NCAP crash test programme; respectable, but not outstanding. It more than meets all the stringent US crash regulations, though, and comes equipped with essentials such as ABS anti-lock brakes and ESP (electronic stability programme, crucial in an SUV with a high centre of gravity). The four-wheel drive and traction control are reassuring should road surfaces get slippery, and if the worst happens, standard kit includes six airbags - including two side curtain 'bags - and front seatbelts with pre-tensioners. An immobiliser is fitted but not an alarm; powerful bi-xenon headlamps are standard.
