  • Road Test: Nissan Murano (2005-)
    Sporting 4x4s by: Farah AlKhalisi
    Rear view in action
    3.5-litre V6 only engine choice
    PERFORMANCE RATING:

The CVT does its stuff without sapping too much power - rare, especially with an engine this size - and whilst the 234bhp engine never feels quite as powerful as the figures suggest (torque is 235lb ft and top speed is claimed to be up to 150mph) it makes fairly effortless progress. Despite Nissan's bold claims, it doesn't quite feel like an SUV sports coupe - more a jacked-up but large-engined family hatch - but it's by no means lumbering, thanks to a relatively low weight (1800kg) considering its overall dimensions. It just feels slightly lacklustre at times, lacking the mid-range strength of a decent diesel engine, though this could be partly down to the low mileage of the cars tested. Nissan says that the Murano range won't get a diesel in this iteration, which is a shame, but it is working on a suitably large, refined unit in partnership with Renault for next time around.
