  • Road Test: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX (2005-)

    PERFORMANCE RATING:

The Evolution IX comes with three power outputs - 305, 326 and 345bhp - named FQ-300, 320 and 340 respectively. All have the same basic, turbocharged 2.0-litre powerplant, but the FQ-320 gets an improved air-intake to up its power, while the 340 gets a different ECU, too. Strangely, they all boast the same top speed of 157mph, although their 0-60mph figures differ, at 4.7, 4.5 and 4.3 seconds respectively. Our past experience of testing Evo VIIIs established that the more powerful these variants get, the less driveable they are, with increased lethargy at low revs as a payoff for increased urgency further round the rev-range. All engines drive through a precise and accurate six-speed manual gearbox.
