  • Road Test: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX (2005-)

    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

Fairly high. The Evo IX offers exceptional pace for the money; few other cars can match its cross-country speed at any price, but like all extremely rapid cars, the Evo takes some looking after. Its engine thrives on a diet of super unleaded, and servicing is needed every 4,500 miles, which is once every six months or so on an average annual mileage. If abused, the Evo will eat through clutches, while track days can take their toll on tyres and brakes. Fuel consumption can be expected to be in the low 20s, falling to teens or less under track day use. Insurance costs are also high. Residual values are pretty good though, especially for well looked-after examples that haven't been modified and have been meticulously maintained - if you're an owner, keep all bills, receipts and the service history.
