The S-Class shrinks around you, feeling like a far smaller car from the driver's seat than it looks. All models get air suspension, giving a super-smooth ride and excellent body control, as well as a five-speed automatic transmission with a Tiptronic-style over-ride. You won't be mistaking the big Merc for a hot hatch, but it's fairly light on its feet for a car of its size. Adaptive damping helps to almost eliminate body roll and the air springs pillow away lumps and bumps. Petrol versions waft about almost noiselessly, but the 320 diesel is disappointingly loud under acceleration.
