  • Road Test: Mercedes-Benz S-Class (2003-)
    Large Executive by: Farah AlKhalisi
    Mercedes Benz S-Class (03- )
    PERFORMANCE RATING:

Pretty well awesome all round. The 5.5-litre bi-turbo V12 (500 bhp, 590 lb ft of torque) is predictably quick, and sounds great too - its growl is distinctive from the more raucous V8s in the S430 and S55 AMG. Even the S350 - which confusingly has the new 3.7-litre straight-six engine - is a suitably fast way to cross continents, though the revised S320 DCI diesel is a more rewarding drive. None are exactly slow, although the continuing S280 is positively workaday in comparison to the rest. We haven't yet driven the new supercharged S55 AMG - now with 500 bhp and 516 lb ft of torque, up from 360 bhp/391 lb ft - but it sounds, errm, promising.
