The S-Class is flasher than it used to be, thanks to attention from footballers, pop stars and gangsta rappers, but it's still not brash or tacky - in the right colour and setting, it remains a classy choice, if not the most understated (that honour goes to the Audi A8). It is also less controversially styled and more elegant than the 7-Series, much more modern-looking than an LS430, and carries more kudos than a Phaeton. A safe but stylish bet for making a statement, though don't expect everyone to greet you with respect - the S-Class is a very obvious fat cat capitalist statement.
