Even the base Elise is considered a proper sports car, because of its light weight and exceptional handling. But there's something even more special about an Exige. Hard to decipher exactly why, because the most obvious styling changes amount to a hard top, a big spoiler and an engine cover. But they do the business, turning the Elise's appearance from a pretty roadster into a race-track refugee. The Yokohama A048 tyres, with hand-cut appearance look the part, too.
The biggest difference between Elise and Exige is probably the type of use they get. If you buy an Exige, it's almost a certainty that you'll take it on a race track. 'The warranty isn't void if you drive on a track,' says Lotus engineer and driving guru Gavan Kershaw. 'In fact, we actually encourage it.'
