Assets
Strong performance, good interior ergonomics, confident handling and comfortable ride, simple touch-screen control system, competitive pricing and equipment, refined new 2.7-litre diesel engine.
Drawbacks
Not much, these days. Styling still not to everybody's taste, not much rear legroom, some switchgear feels a little cheap. No estate option.
Verdict
The 2002 overhaul, the 2004 minor facelift and the addition of a fine diesel engine to the range have transformed the once uninspired S-Type from an also-ran into one of the most competitive cars in its class.
