All S-Types are lusty performers. Even the base V6 has 200bhp, with the 3.0-litre adding another 40 horses, and both are now more refined than they were initially. Both have plenty of torque, despite developing maximum power high up the rev-range at 6800rpm. The 4.2-litre V8 sounds good and produces some 300bhp, but if that isn't enough, plump for the S-Type R. On a different note, the new 2.7 V6 diesel (206bhp) has more torque than the 4.2 V8, is impressively refined and sophisticated, and is beautifully strong and smooth, if laid-back until its twin turbos kick in fully.
