  • Road Test: Honda Integra Type-R (1997-2001)
    Affordable Sports
    Honda Integra Type-R (97-01)
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

Not as expensive to run as you might imagine, with routine service costs that are no more off-putting than those of other Honda coupes, though they are quite frequent. However, in time, when the unique hand-finished engine and special suspension components need replacing, it could prove expensive. Group 18 insurance isn't too bad given the performance, though. The Type-R drinks expensive super unleaded or Optimax fuel, rather than normal unleaded, and fuel consumption will suffer if you're heavy with your right foot - you'll be lucky to see 20mpg in 'real life' driving. It's also prone to eating tyres. However, though it may seem expensive for a Honda, costs are cheap compared to those for more 'exotic' sports cars with similar performance. A great car, but values are now under serious pressure from Japanese grey imports. It was sold in limited numbers in the UK, but that exclusivity has not really lasted. Black and red Type-Rs are easier to resell, so hold their value better. Considering that you're getting a street-legal track-racer, the Type-R seems like a bargain. Some more refined, higher-specified rivals (such as the Fiat Coupe) come cheaper now, but if an Integra's really what you want and you're on a budget, then there are plenty of perfectly decent 'grey' imports in the country to choose from. The choice is yours - just make sure you know what you're looking at.
