  • Road Test: Ford Ranger (2002-)

    SAFETY AND SECURITY RATING:

Don't expect all the comforts of a passenger 4x4, but standard equipment does include driver and passenger airbags, a collapsible steering-wheel column and, on some models, ABS anti-lock brakes. The latest Ranger models feature extra crumple zones between their front bumper and structure - to absorb the energy of an impact - and a detachable centre bearing on their drive shafts, which releases the crash energy rather than allowing it to be transferred to the rear axle and cabin. A fuel tank guard gives extra protection, and the headlights have been improved for better night time vision. Security features include remote central locking (except on entry-level models) and a rolling code immobiliser.
