    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

The favourable taxation regime tempting many people to buy pick-ups rather than 'passenger' 4x4s may well be ended soon, but in the meantime, the Ranger should be cheaper to run than a more car-like off-roader. Ford parts and servicing will be cheap, insurance reasonable, and it isn't too badly thirsty for a vehicle this size and weight. Used trucks can be risky purchases, as they're likely to have been worked very hard, but the Ranger should be a robust, reasonably priced option. Like most of its ilk, the Ranger is a lot of truck and work tool for the money, though it's not as accomplished an all-rounder as the more modern, refined Navara or L200. It also gets considerably more expensive once you start adding chrome bars, side steps, load bay liners and so on, items which are standard on some rivals. However, it should provide great ongoing service down on the farm, at the building site or for heavy towing, and still retain some value when it comes to be sold on.
