  • Road Test: Ford Fiesta Zetec S (1999-2002)
    Hot Hatchbacks

    Ford Fiesta
    by JB Leigh

I've now owned a 1.1 Saxo East Coast and a 1.6 Corsa Sport, and I've had a Micra 1.0 and a Saxo 1.6 VTR as hire cars. Although all these cars have been a delight to drive, I've now bought a new Fiesta 1.4 Zetec. The styling isn't all that great, but this can easily be forgiven as it's such a great drive.
The engine is quiet, refined and very responsive, and the handling is the best of any supermini I've driven. The cabin is very bright and airy compared with those of the Saxo and Corsa, and you don't get the feeling that everybody else on the road could easily wipe you out. The Fiesta feels quite a lot bigger, yet when it comes to parking it is as easy to park as the Micra.
All in all, I think the Fiesta is a great car, and people should be a little more forgiving of the styling. After all, it's not that bad!
