Ford Cougar
by Pete Shepherd 03/04/02
About two weeks ago I went out to buy a car to replace our aging Citroen XM. I intended to buy a Vauxhall Omega but came back with the Ford Cougar VX 2.5 auto! What a wonderful car (apart from its low speed ride - which is somewhat lumpy). It comes with almost every gizmo a person can want (apart from a sat nav device). The engine is silky smooth in any driving condition and road holding superb - on a local twisty and windy road I managed 10 mph faster than in any other car I have driven; road holding is excellent. The engine just pulls from any speed and once going has that lovely, but subdued, roar to it. This is a fast car, but not a sports car, it's a GT with the original meaning of Grand Tourer. I feel I can travel a long distance in comfort with enough boot space for a decent amount of luggage. I wouldn't want to sit in the back, that must be reserved for people under about 5' 9", but up front the car is delightfully comfortable - a genuine 2+2. Reversing in this car is a nightmare however; there is extremely limited rear view vision, but the main purpose of a car is to drive forwards which this does to perfection. My only regret is that this is my wife's car and I have to drive a Ford Ka!!
