| RUNNING COSTS RATING: |
 |
Broadly a Cougar costs the same to run as an equivalent Mondeo saloon - which means relatively modest costs. It also benefits from the lowest insurance ratings in its class and servicing costs that compare well with a saloon's. And more good news - fuel consumption is modest and resale values are currently strong. Long term, the Cougar is likely to become a victim of fashionable design and Ford's low-prestige image, but currently it still has novelty value, as there are not many around on the used market. The 2.5-litre model with luxury pack sells very easily, but the 2.0 is potentially the most desirable buy. Depreciation, for the moment, is low. Equipment is generous even on the cheapest version, which come with alloy wheels, air conditioning and electric windows - the range topping V6 adds leather seats, a CD autochanger and metallic paint to the list. The only downside is Ford's one year warranty.
