The 1.6 pulls well, sounds enthusiastic and is generally pleasant, bar a resonant drone at high revs. It may struggle with a big load, but it makes a good choice. The 1.8 is a bit brisker but doesn't sound as satisfying, while the 2.4, whose five cylinders create a smooth, soothing and uneven beat, has strong reserves of power without feeling madly quick, and it's thirsty, too. The 1.9 JTD is the best choice for the five-door - it has loads of pulling power, and its diesel rhythm doesn't intrude unpleasantly.
