  • Road Test: Fiat Stilo (2002-)
    Small Family
    Fiat Stilo (02- )
    DRIVING RATING:

There's plenty of adjustment in the driver's seat and steering wheel (though no seat tilt) while the high driving position of the five door makes this a car you feel in control of, especially as it has light, easily manipulated controls - in 'city' mode the power assistance makes light work of manoeuvring. Radar parking sensors are an option, too. Visibility is good to the front and fair to the rear, but the door mirrors are too small. All the engines we tried - the 1.6, 1.8,1.9 turbodiesel and 2.4 - have a fair bit of go in them, the 2.4 five cylinder petrol sounding particularly sporty at times. The three-door Stilo is set up to provide more responsive steering and this, coupled with excellent roadholding and fine agility, make it an entertaining companion, if not quite a sports car. The five-door is marginally less agile, with its slower steering and greater height, but is still composed through corners. The Ford Focus and Peugeot 307 are a little more rewarding for the keen driver, however.
