  • Road Test: Daihatsu Sirion (1998-2005)
    Superminis
    Daihatsu Sirion (98- )
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

Like the Cuore, the Sirion excels in economy. The 1.0-litre engine's one of the most fuel-efficient around, the 1.3's not bad either, and Daihatsu servicing is reasonable. Insurance starts from Group 5, and the 1.0-litre qualifies for the cheapest road tax too. Demand for this small hatchback is high, as not only does it qualify for reduced road tax, but it's economical and well-equipped. Daihatsu owners tend to be loyal, coming back time and time again. Daihatsu dealers have most secondhand examples, coming in as trade-ins, but older Sirions are now sometimes available in the private classified ads. Most will be low-mileage and carefully maintained, though do watch out for hard-worked, abused ex-driving school cars. An enticing package all round, especially the fully loaded Sirion+. Buy with metallic paint and depreciation is better contained; even so, it's holding its value well so far. The long warranty is a big bonus. Daihatsu is currently offering a comprehensive three-year warranty, with three years free servicing and breakdown cover as well.
