The 1.6-litre 16-valve petrol engine is pretty nippy, fairly smooth and decently economical. The most appealing choice is the 2.0-litre HDi diesel though, in either 90bhp or 110bhp guise; the 1.4 HDI - none too quick in the smaller C3 or Peugeot 307 - struggles a bit, and the 1.4i petrol is a bit weedy. The coupe is still offered with the 167bhp 2.0-litre, as well as the 1.6i 16v and 2.0 HDI 110. No shortage of speed on offer, but the Xsara hatchback's demeanour is better suited to relaxed cruising than boy racer behaviour. The coupe is quick, though.
