Citroen Xsara
by Mike Forsey
I think the Xsara has been underestimated by the various magazines etc. You give it four stars, which is probably what it deserves overall. I have driven this car for a number of months. The model we have is only a 1.4 limited-edition version, but it's a joy to drive. It's fun, takes corners accurately and makes you feel confident at the wheel, with good ABS brakes included as standard. It may not have the overall dynamics of the Ford Focus, but I dislike the Ford's exterior styling. Some reviews have said that the Xsara has bland styling, but I think this is unfair. There are far blander models from other manufacturers in this area of the market. For example, the Vauxhall Astra and Vectra, which I really dislike. The styling is up-to-date and rounded, as opposed to Citroen's previous angular designs, and our limited-edition model has colour-coded bumpers. The interior is well laid out and functional with good aesthetics. It's not over-cluttered, and everything is neatly designed. It's also comfortable to drive, with good ergonomics. There was a lot of equipment included as standard on our car - ABS, twin airbags, air-conditioning etc - making it very good value. I have also driven a Ford Mondeo, which was a nice car, but I prefer the Xsara for its more fluid corner-taking ability, smoother ride, well-weighted power steering with good feedback etc. The 1.4-litre engine does not have much grunt, but is adequate for our purposes. There are obviously better cars around, but for the price and the market it is designed for, it fulfils its purpose as a family car.
