| RUNNING COSTS RATING: |
 |
Well, if you can afford the purchase price, and have two other cars in the garage (which BMW reckons owners will have), then we suppose that bills won't be too much of an issue. Which is just as well, because the M5 is astronomically thirsty. Overall, BMW claims 19mpg, but we'd be astounded if customers get that much. We returned around 17mpg with relaxed driving, while when pressing on, 10mpg isn't hard to achieve. We reckon most owners will return 15mpg, which is about on a par with a petrol Range Rover. CO2 emissions are 357g/km, so don't expect any reprieve from the taxman if you're running one as a company motor.
Servicing will be costly, as will replacement parts, even for perishables such as tyres, brakes and clutches. BMW's control systems might be clever, but automated manual gearboxes tend to be hard on clutches, too, especially when they've got 384lb ft to contend with. Insurance grouping is predictably steep at 20, but limited import numbers (around 450 a year will be sold) should help the M5 hold on to its resale value quite well.
