New 3.0 petrol is a strong performer
| PERFORMANCE RATING: |
BMW's new six-cylinder 258bhp 3.0-litre petrol engine is 27bhp more powerful than the one it replaces, and it is claimed to be the lightest six-cylinder engine in its class. Performance is outstanding, with 62mph coming up in just 6.3 secs and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph. And the turbine-like smoothness we've come to expect from BMW 'sixes is here in abundance. The standard gearbox is a sweet-shifting six-speed manual, with a six-speed automatic available as an option. The 218 bhp 2.5-litre is equally impressive and also utterly satisfying to drive, not least because of its wonderful engine note.
We've also tried BMW's latest generation 2.0-litre turbodiesel, which proved a revelation. It's a little more powerful and torquey than the previous generation 2.0d, with 153bhp and 250lb ft of torque, but it feels a good deal quicker. The 0-62mph sprint takes 8.3 secs and the top speed is a claimed (and entirely believable) 140mph. And that big mid-range punch delivers a relaxed, low-revving performance. Combined fuel consumption is an impressive 49.6mpg and the 320d is Euro IV compliant, good news for company car drivers. The current 320d is the most popular 3-Series in the UK, and we'd expect the new car to continue that trend.
