  • Road Test: BMW 3-Series (2005-)
    Compact Executive by: Gavin Conway
    BMW 3-Series 2005
Despite performance, all engines return good fuel economy
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

Thanks to low depreciation and reasonable servicing costs, the 3-Series has been more affordable than you might think, and we have no reason to expect the new car will be any different. And unlike past models, the latest 3-Series is reasonably well equipped, so buyers shouldn't be overwhelmed with optional-extra costs. A six-speed manual gearbox, air conditioning, electric windows all round, trip computer and 16-inch wheels with 'run-flat' tyres are all standard fit. The only option we'd recommend as it has a positive effect on resale value is metallic paint. And even though the new 2.0-litre turbodiesel 320d is more powerful, it still returns a very useful 49.6mpg combined, exactly the same as the previous model. The new 3.0-litre petrol is more frugal than the engine it replaces, returning 33.2mpg.
