    INTRODUCTION

Line up the latest A4 Cabriolet, revised for winter 2005, against the outgoing model and you'd be hard-pressed to spot the differences, apart from the addition of the new single-frame silver grille, as on other newly-revised Audis.

In fact, it really doesn't look that different from the original, highly successful, 80-based cabrio sold 1991-2000: the same solid, simply drawn design, with an absence of frills, fussy embellishments or superfluous details, but subtly brought up to date in line with the contemporary A4 saloons and Avant estates.

The four-seater Cabriolet has also received modifications to its suspension and steering for 2006, plus a general equipment upgrade and the choice of some new engines. The turbocharged 1.8t (163bhp) continues, but the 2.4 has been dropped and the 3.0 V6 petrol has been replaced by the new direct-injection 3.2 FSI V6 (255bhp), as in the Golf R32. The new piezo-injection 3.0 V6 TDI (233bhp) replaces the old 2.5; a further diesel option is the entry-level four-cylinder 2.0 TDI (140bhp). Plus, of course, there's the S4 4.2 V8 (344bhp).

Quattro four-wheel drive is optional (standard with the S4), and transmission choices include five- or six-speed manual gearboxes or six- or seven-speed Multitronic CVTs, depending on engine.
