Alfa Romeo GTV and Spider (03- )
    INTRODUCTION

Alfa's GTV coupe and Spider duo has been about for quite a while now. They were both launched in mid-1995 - aeons ago in the automotive world - and they will be replaced by two models based on the Brera concept, the GTV appearing in 2005, the Spider in 2006. Meanwhile, Alfa has decided to give them a minor cosmetic makeover and added some engines to the ageing line-up. The advanced 2.0-litre JTS unit that we have already seen in the 156 joins the old 2.0-litre Twin Spark, while the 3.0-litre V6 is dropped in favour of the magnificent 3.2-litre V6 engine that also powers the 147 and 156 GTA. It won't be difficult to spot the refreshed cars when they arrive in the autumn - they both wear Alfa 147-inspired noses and ride on fresh alloy wheels. Pretty as the nose is, this bout of rhinoplasty can do little to hide the Alfa pair's age. The chassis feels tired and creaky, the suspension battles with anything but the smoothest of roads and the steering lacks the precision you'd expect from an athletic roadster and coupe. The cabin also looks dated, feels cramped, and is unlikely to win any award for build quality.

Nor are things helped by the raft of rivals that have arrived on the market over the last five years. There's the dynamic and edgy BMW Z4, the razor-sharp Honda S2000, and the Hyundai Coupe and Mazda RX-8. And don't forget about the new Mercedes SLK that's lurking in the wings. These competitors all conspire to make opting for either the GTV or the Spider a decidedly illogical choice - yet therein lies the key to the Alfa's appeal. Despite their age and faults, the little Alfas are still mysteriously desirable. Take a quick test drive in one and you'll see what we mean.
