    Alfa Romeo GTV
    by Christopher Cousins 13.11.02

Alfa Romeo 2.0 GTV Lusso: Most comments here seem to relate to fairly new cars. Nothing wrong with that, but how would you like to hear about the catalogue of horrors affecting a 96P car with over 70000 miles? If so, may I suggest that you look elsewhere? Mine has been 100% reliable. The Twin Spark engine amazingly sounds better with higher mileage and seems to give even more urge in the GTV than in the 156 (slightly lower kerb weight perhaps?). The air conditioning is not as convenient (or efficient) as the climate control system in the later cars and the interior design is a generation behind, but then the GTV is the oldest model in the current Alfa range. That said, the layout is fine and mine has no squeaks or rattles. Admittedly, the seats are not designed for the rotund and those in the back are for luggage only. The boot is fine for a weekly shop, but don't ever take one to the supermarket - you'll be guaranteed to get a 4x4 or a white van parked beside you.

For a car allegedly based on the Fiat Tipo floorpan the roadholding is a revelation, although the ride is hard, even taking the high tyre pressures into account. The main reason for buying a coupe nowadays is to enjoy driving and stand out from the herd. The Alfa GTV succeeds on both counts and the early ones now prove you don't need to worry about reliability and build quality - just look after the one you have or buy with a full service history and professional report if you're looking at secondhand ones. Finally a word on insurance - shop around! The owners club has a scheme that could save you a surprisingly large amount (and certainly more than the cost of a year's club membership). The quotes I got this year varied by more than £1000, so don't be frightened into looking at other cars. The GTV will never be a family car, but is easily practical enough for two people - just think about how often you use all the available space in your current car, then go out and buy a GTV!
