Economy is not the V6's strong point, but the four-cylinder cars are competitive here (averaging 32.5mpg for the JTS, 42.2mpg for the JTD). Servicing is needed every 12,000 miles or once a year, insurance groups are rather high with the JTD and JTS rated as group 15 and the V6 group 19. Demand could exceed the supply of new GTs, which will keep values firm and the image high, which will bode well for future residuals. The success of Alfa Romeo's plans for a revitalised dealer network will be crucial. Or people could stay wary of committing themselves to the Alfa idea as wholeheartedly as they might to a BMW, which will reduce demand and make for some used-car bargains.
The GT is a fine car, no doubt about that. To flourish in the pre-owned market, it just needs the buyer confidence and manufacturer support it deserves. Prices undercut the BMW 3-series by a £2000-£3000 spec-for-spec. The cheapest 2.0 JTS starts at £20,995, with £26,995 buying a full-spec V6. A Hyundai Coupe makes the GT look pricey, a Mercedes CLK makes it look a bargain.
