  • Road Test: Alfa Romeo 156 (1997-2002)
    Compact Executive

    Alfa 156
    by David Cooper 28.07.03

I have had a revised 2002 model JTD since last August. I can only say it is one of the best cars I have had the pleasure to own, and the first 18,000 miles have been trouble free, with only one visit to the dealer for its 12,000 mile service which passed without hitch. The performance of the car is everything one could ask for, with a wide spread of usable torque giving rapid acceleration, accompanied by a pleasing five cylinder tune similar to an early Quattro. When this is coupled with an average of 50 miles per gallon, what more can you ask?

Inside I find it comfortable, although agree with the comment on the driver's seat not going low enough. The interior has stood up well to the rigours of carrying two small boys in the back, and the car easily swallowed all the luggage for a two week holiday in Scotland, which before I had doubted, having read many negative comments. It does have a small boot opening though, limiting what can be carried. The main criticism I have is of the appalling turning circle. One happy Alfa 156 driver.
