  • Road Test: Alfa Romeo 156 (1997-2002)
    Compact Executive
    Alfa Romeo 156 (97-02)
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

The Alfa has slightly above average servicing costs: you'll need to find a skilled specialist to look after it and they don't come cheap.

Insurance can also be high. The four-cylinder models offer competitive economy relative to their performance; the V6 is a bit thirsty. But overall, its running costs are competitive.

The 156 has never held its value well and thus it's now a cheap second-hand buy - just don't invest too much money in one. The 1.8 TS with Sports Pack remains a sought-after version, while the 2.5 V6, despite being a great car, loses value fastest.

But all are well-equipped, with standard air conditioning and CD players - making for a better-value purchase than an Audi, BMW or Merc of an equivalent age, mileage and power output.
