Truth be told, we preferred the 156's looks before the 2003 facelift, but it's still a damned attractive car - the best-looker in this class by a country mile, at least until the new 159 came along.
Alfa Romeo used to pitch this car as a rival to the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but has become a bit more realistic these days, accepting that it's a Mondeo/Primera/Accord rival - and among this crowd, the 156 is a much more compelling proposition.
