  • Road Test: Alfa Romeo 156 (2002-2003)
    Large Family
    Alfa Romeo 156 (02-03)
    RUNNING COSTS RATING:

The 156 did not hold its value as well as the BMW 3-Series and was also beaten by the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class - meaning that second-hand, it's now a cheaper buy.

Values of used 156s are slipping further now the all-new 159 is here, so don't invest too much in one. The JTD diesels hold their value the best; the GTA has a hardcore following and so remains desirable too.

Engines are relatively economical, although the V6 units are thirsty when pushed hard and GTA drivers will get to know their petrol station attendants very well.

156 servicing costs and insurance rates are slightly higher than for rivals but overall, running costs are generally competitive.
