Part of the hefty price tag is down to the satellite navigation system. This retails for £900 and replaces the standard Smart stereo with an integrated unit that combines a CD player with a navi system. I've used similar systems before which have been source of irritation because every time you want to be navigated, you have to replace the music CD with the mapping disc, and visa versa.

But the Smart system has a major advantage over most of its rivals. After it has calculated the appropriate route, it stores it in an internal memory. You are then free to re-insert the music CD. It's a brilliantly simple system and one that successfully directed me all the way from the Spa Francochamps circuit in Belgium to my flat in south-west London. There was even amusement to be had in listening to Christina Aguilera's wail being overridden by an instruction to 'turn right ahead.'
