Audi TTS Shelley
An Audi TTS rally car called 'Shelley' will contest next year's Pikes Peak hill climb in Colorado without a driver on board.
Shelley, the nickname of former Audi works driver Michelle Mouton, has been developed by Volkswagen's Electronics Research lab, Stamford University and Sun Microsystems using fly-by-wire technology to guide it around the challenging mountain course.
It is hoped the car will perform at the same kind of speeds as a traditional driver-controlled rally car. A system is also being developed that will shut the car down automatically if it detects the running conditions are no longer safe or if the car is out of control.
