Motoring: Hard shoulder death risk higher for men

Visibility is crucial

Men are three times as likely as women to be killed or injured on the hard shoulder, according to new Department for Transport statistics.

In the last 15 years 2,058 men were killed or injured, compared to 768 women, when their cars had broken down by the roadside.

Car care specialists Comma is calling for the Government to fall in line with other European countries by making it mandatory to wear high-visibility clothing on the side of the road.

High-vis vests have been proved in tests to increase visibility of stranded drivers by up to 400%.

Psychologists say that more men are killed because they are more likely to believe they can fix the problem, even if in reality they can't.
