Current speed camera
New 'intelligent' speed cameras that don't flash and that can cover multiple lanes are to be installed on UK roads over the next 18 months.
The new smart cameras should also be able to pick up speeding lorry drivers because they can distinguish between trucks and cars. Current Gatso-type cameras are not able to differentiate between vehicles.
They will be trialled in France and, unlike the current yellow cameras in the UK, these new devices will blend with other street furniture.
The Highways Agency is also planning to spend £58 million on new digital cameras designed to spot drivers using the hard shoulder on motorways.
