A senior BMW engineer has confirmed the firm is readying the 'most advanced small engine range ever' which could even be a three-cylinder unit.
Speaking exclusively to 4Car, BMW chief engineer, Holger Winkelmann, confirmed the next-generation petrol engine line-up will borrow engine technology for the forthcoming 5-Series Gran Turismo's all-new 3.0-litre straight six engine.
Future small BMWs petrol engines will gain turbocharger have direct injection and will benefit from both Valvematic that infinitely varies valve lift and Vanos that varies intake.
'Some people talk about using this technology in the future, but we have it now and will use it,' said Winklemann going on to add that even in the near future expect engines as small as a 1.6 replacing will the current six-cylinder range. There's even possibility of a three-cylinder powerplant being introduced to the range.
