Renault has unveiled a new electric prototype vehicle to premiere its range of electric cars ahead of the first mass-produced electric Renault going on sale in 2011.

Based on the concept unveiled at last year's Paris Motor Show, the new Kangoo Be Bop ZE prototype is distinguished from the rest of the Kangoo range by low-energy front and rear LED lighting, aerodynamic tweaks, large 18" wheels and 20mm lower ride.

Like the Parisian concept, the prototype boasts power gauges embedded in the outside of its doors allowing the owner to check the Kangoo's charge from a distance.

Under the bonnet is a 59bhp electric motor that is claimed to be up to 90% more efficient then a conventional internal combustion engine.

In the Be Bop it delivers a limited top speed of just over 80mph and a range of around 60 miles although thanks to future lithium ion technology the production model is expected to run for almost 100 miles before a charge is needed.

Charging takes between 6-8 hours from a conventional socket and just 30mins for an 80% from a 400A three phase charger.

Renault has confirmed the production version of the Kangoo van will be the first mass produced electric vehicle to go on sale in Europe alongside a small family saloon that goes on sale in Israel. In both cases the French firm stresses that not only will both boast zero tailpipe emissions, but will be affordable for the 'majority of road users.'

The Kangoo Be Bop will embark on a European tour from July and will be available for test drives.
