Motor Show: Geneva 2009: Ferrari 599XX

03 Mar 09 14:05

Ferrari's 599XX is an experimental prototype for a very select group of clients, for whom Ferrari will organise a programme of events in 2010-2011.

Think of it as a collectors' car, however: it's not actually homologated for competitions. Oh, and it isn't even road-legal either despite being based on the 'production' 599 GTB Fiorano.

Ferrari describes the 599XX as 'a genuine technological laboratory', and owners will get to give their feedback to engineers on the latest generation of aerodynamic enhancements, electronic control systems and handling innovations, many developed from Ferrari's F1 cars.

Power has been lifted from 620bhp to 700bhp - peaking at 9000rpm -thanks to revised engine combustion chambers and new inlet and exhaust tracts. The V12 engine is lighter, with a new crankshaft and carbonfibre components including the intake plenums. Gearchange times are now down to 60 milliseconds. Revised electronic control systems include new-generation suspension management, and a 'virtual car engineer' screen with telemetry data.

Aerodynamic enhancements include new air-channeling vents from the engine bay and bonnet, a completely faired-in underbody, a porous diffuser and fans in the boot to channel air flow from underneath, plus 'winglets' in the rear pillars and anti-drag jets to control and smooth the airflow. Downforce is much-increased at high speeds, and F1-style brake disc/wheel rim covers aid both braking and aerodynamics. Carbonfibre brake pads are fitted with ceramic-carbon components, along with 19-inch wheels and slick tyres.

Pricing has yet to be announced.
